- Related Researches of Analysis of Scarlett Orsquo;Hara in Gone with the Wind
Gone with the Wind is a novel by American writer Margaret Mitchell. Set during the American Civil War and Reconstruction Era, the novel describes a young woman Scarlett Orsquo;Hararsquo;s struggle to stay away from poverty and retain property. The novel is written from the perspective of slave owners, so it is often in dispute. But the novel shows us the history of southern American planation ownersrsquo; collapse and the awakening of feminist consciousness. As a consequence, Gone with the Wind has been accepted as a classic literature gradually and an increasingly number of scholars begin to study this novel. The researches of Scarlettrsquo;s characterizations are varied.
The related researches of analysis of Scarlett Orsquo;Hara in Gone with the Wind can be divided into the following aspects:
1.1 Comparison of the Characterizations of Scarlett Orsquo;Hara with Other Figures
There are a great number of ways to analyze the main heroine Scarlett Orsquo;Hara in academia. Some scholars try to study her characterization by comparing with other figures in other works.
Li Shasha tries to compare the images of women in Vanity Fair and Gone with the Wind (2006). He makes a comparison between Rebecca Sharp and Scarlett Orsquo;Hara in the view of background and appearance, their attitudes towards society, difficulties and fate, thus to show that these two females in two novels are great and easy to “adjust themselves to have an optimistic attitude towards life” (Li Shasha, 2006: 38). Liang Meng makes a comparison between Bai Liusu in Love in a Fallen City and Scarlett in Gone with the Wind from a feminist perspective (2012). By comparing the differences of the two heroines, he points out some inspirations for modern women. Gao Xinyan does a comparative research of Yao Mulan in Lin Yutangrsquo;s work and Scarlett (2009). He concludes that although their personalities are totally different, both of them are unique women with feminist consciousness. Tunnell compares the images in Gone with the Wind and Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier (2007).
1.2 The Analyses of Scarlett by Studying Her View of Love and Marriage
The analysis of Scarlett Orsquo;Hararsquo;s view of love and marriage is also very popular. Some scholars try to study her view of love and marriage to analyze her characteristics.
Wang Yan researches Scarlettrsquo;s love for Ashley and Rhett and concludes that she is attached to her love firmly and she is an iconoclast (2010). Han Lina, Wang Chao and Wang Zijian researches Scarlettrsquo;s three marriages to analyze her view of marriage, thus to show her characteristics (2015).
